When I first went vegan almost 10 years ago, I was angry. Not just about things like factory farming and cosmetic testing, but also about how no one around me seemed to be even remotely outraged as I was about it. So although I was vegan, I didn’t quite know how to be vegan.
What I learned over the years is that veganism isn’t just about eschewing all animal products (although that’s a big part of it) … it’s also about doing it with a spirit of kindness and grace (which is and should be the driving force behind veganism in the first place). I picked up this book about a month ago and couldn't put it down. The Don't Be A Jerk chapter was by far one of my favorites but the whole book is filled with valuable insight for vegans and non-vegans alike.

i didn't realize asking the question about where vegans get their protein was rude? whenever i've posed that question, it was out curiosity, as well as hopefully finding another source of protein for myself to try…

It's not really rude, but it's just a question that vegans get all of time. Plenty of protein sources come from plants!

For me, it's the spirit in which they ask it. I've been asked once how my kids could possibly be healthy on a vegetarian diet : Not keep in mind, my kids are in the 85 percentile for weight, 99 percentile for height and can out run and out wit any kid on the playground!
