Tater Tot-Cho Tacos

The Taco Cleanse

Born from a 2013 Vegan Mofo theme, which later morphed into a zine created by Austin-based taco scientists, The Taco Cleanse is now officially a cookbook!

The Taco Cleanse

The Taco Cleanse is the definitive tortilla-based diet, proven to change your life and prevent or reverse taco deficiency. But how exactly does TTC work?

By outlining a simple, taco-based cleanse that starts with defining what a taco is (it’s never a burrito), to positing the question, “is the taco cleanse right for you?” (of course it is), to designing a 1-day (mild) up to a 30-day (fuego) cleansing plan, TTC expertly guides you along on your taco-based journey, with proven results (and even a certificate of completion!)

Before I made any recipes from the cookbook, I had some doubts about my ability to do a cleanse. I’ve tried and failed at other cleanses, and didn’t want to go down the same path as before. Would this cleanse be any different? I asked myself.

After reading TTC, all of my doubts were erased. Because the diet is based on rewarding you with delicious tacos instead of depriving you of your favorite foods, there’s no way you can fail. As long as your main dish is always a taco, you’re always on the right path. It’s basically a cakewalk (or a “tacowalk” as TTC puts it).

The Taco Cleanse

Some things to note:

Breakfast is always tacos. Some recipes include Energizing Dutch Waffle Tacos, Mighty Migas Tacos and Tropical Breakfast Tacos.

Lunch is always tacos. Some recipes include Frito Pie Tacos, Enlightened Soy Curls Al Pastor and Smoked Brisket and Jalepeno Mac and Cheese Tacos.

Dinner is always tacos. Some recipes include Beer-Battered Portobellos, Elevated Sonoran Hot Dog Tacos and these amazing Tater Tot-Cho Tacos to your left. Tater tots and soyrizo are mingled together with cashew crema, elevated nacho cheeze and guac, and garnished with scallions, jalepenos and cilantro over a tortilla, folded over exactly once. Upon finishing this taco, I felt an increased glow, my chakras became aligned and an overall sense of satisfaction at giving my body what it naturally craves (delicious tacos) was achieved … just as the taco scientists of TTC predicted!

Like me, you are probably wondering if there are any supplements to the cleanse, and the answer is yes. Some supplemental superfood recipes in TTC include Agave Margaritas, Rehydrating Wateritas, Everyday Mexican Margaritas and The Minor Cleanse (TTCs version of The Master Cleanse).

If you are ready to detox your dreams, redefine your dinner and get that fresh taco-y feeling, The Taco Cleanse should not only be a part of your life, but also a part of your cookbook collection. And you’re in luck because the nice folks over at The Experiment are offering a free copy of The Taco Cleanse to one lucky reader through this post!

Jackfruit!!! It has the most amazing texture, and lends itself to any flavor you choose. I love it bbq'd, but also have a serious addiction to sriracha. My email is: teribeariblue@yahoo.com

I love any taco, ever, but my standby is just a naughty soft white tortilla steamed with creamy refried beans, a little daiya cheddar, lots of freshly diced white onion, lots of shredded iceberg, and literally almost any kind of hot sauce. Avo with lime on the side.

So many options…hard to pick a fav. Jackfruit is awesome. I've also found a chipotle seitan product that rocks. Cubed, spiced and roasted potatoes are also amazing. Shredded red cabbage or iceberg lettuce (I know, not the most nutritious choice), vegan sour cream, salsa, roasted peppers or fresh jalapenos and guac. Definitely guac! Can't wait to try the tots–brilliant idea!

I'm not sure how well the cookbook would work for our family as we're all gluten free so wheat tortillas would be out, and I avoid GMOs and it's quite hard to find organic corn tortillas that won't break the bank for our family of 7. I do know how to make them, but I doubt I'd be up to making homemade tortillas x7 three times a day for a month. πŸ™‚

All that said, it sounds like a wonderful book and I'd love to check it out. It's hard to say my favorite taco filling, but garbanzo beans with salsa and corn are a fun, nearly instant taco filling that my kids make and that taste wonderful. I also love Mexican spiced lentils, guacamole, black beans, potato cubes and so many other things. Oh, and there's a fabulous vegan spicy southwestern ranch dressing (organic and non-GMO, to boot) from Follow Your Heart, I believe, that makes every taco better. It's hard to go wrong with tacos!
